Purchased Vintage Patterns

I'm excited I've found a vendor on EBay that sells vintage patterns, she has 600 patterns up for offer and I sat through looking at everyone of them! Three faced doll. Mostly what you see from my first purchase is recognisable dolls, one pattern is a baby crawling, this one is Kewpie! I've never seen a cloth Kewpie and I'm anxious to see how all the little details are done. And who doesn't know Humpty Dumpty, the only difference is the pattern is large enough to make it a pajama bag. It reads the pattern can be a large doll though, either way....I was getting this one! Wouldn't he look great painted and varnished?

I purchased the crawling baby because I'm intrigued about the steadiness of the arms and legs, chances are the fabric needs to be cut on the bias, diagonally to the weave.

And the boudoir clothing pattern! Now you can see what my doll will be wearing! (the little items are a hat and garter)

Pink Saturday Sockhop

I know last year at this time I photographed madame's pink poodle skirt for Pink Saturday. I didn't get a chance to show her because she went to the school sock hop with a friend. This friend always has her birthday party to be part of going to the sock hop as a group. This year the group has decided to go to the movies, so....I got to attend the sock hop. Sorry for the darkness, I'm finding with this camera, it's better to turn the flash off while in the gym, consequently the shutter speed is slower so the movement blurs.

This is madame's last sock hop as she will be in middle school next year, isn't her skirt cute?

She tells me her "peace" is her signature. Siggnaturre!?!

A Few Vintage Dolls

As promised, for today I am going to talk about "Trudy" and the "Boudoir" doll of the 30' or 40's. Below is the actual Trudy doll, she was composition and the brain child of the many faces doll company. The examples I've seen also has a attached bonnet to the body, the idea is to always have 3 dolls in one while caring for only one. Trudy is very cute and she was a instant hit.

Very few, excellent conditioned Trudy's survive today. And frankly, it's something indescribable to see the head mold, it's seamed around all faces. I guess if you weren't a doll lover.....you could describe it.

I find the little tuffs of hair so adorable, they must be attached to inside the bonnet.

Cute.

Next, we see the classic boudoir doll, I found these to be called "keen eyed", I'm assuming it's because their eyelids are halfway shut. Notice how thin they are, one person described the limbs as like a sausage.

This is the boudoir doll that I would like to have, many of them adorned beautiful full gowns with puffy sleeve cuffs, others had straight shifts. I think the lounging pj's make the statement about what the doll represents.

Here is what I have, you can see Trudy is not the real Trudy but a porcelain image. She is quite large and heavy. I paid $3.00 for her and the hot pink body she was attached to. I removed it because not only was it a bad proportion, it was downright ugly.

I thought the boudoir doll head was a ornament because it had a silver tread with a Christmas hook at the turban part of her head. I was very pleased to find 4 holes in the neck that allowed me to run tread through them and attach it to the body.
I used pipe cleaners inside the stuffed limbs of my doll so she can be posed.

I tell ya, I printed the boudoir doll pattern from DIY, the doll is Jiliana, she is pretty but a @!#?! to stuff!

Projects

I'm wondering if anyone noticed, while photographing my painted doll, she is seen laying on a box. Yep, I pulled some more stuff from my pending craft room. Pictured above.
I wasn't to bright doing this, I let the bags roll down the stairs and I heard something break. Who puts fragile items in a bag!?! Obviously I do. I ended up with a dime size piece of arm broken to "Trudy" :( :( I'm not that happy about it but I'm glad that was all. Could of been worse.
This brings me to my point, 3, count them....3 doll projects (Oh, I can just do this and that and imagine....) for your consideration. Which would you like to see: (at least next!)


1. A full composition doll that needs minor repairs to the face, repairs to her wig and dressing.
2. A boudoir doll construction (I have only the head) and dressing.
3. Trudy, a 3 faced doll in need of a body and dressing, including a bonnet to conceal 2 of the faces at one time.

I have a bid on EBay for boudoir clothing so there maybe a small stall on that one but nothing bad. My vote would be for the boudoir doll but don't let me influence you, they all need to be done.

Revealing the Painted Doll

Well, I finished her, I even managed to make a imitation rattle in a dusty rosy pink color. I don't know what it is but this baby reminds me of a girl. She will take-up her spot on the extra chair in the dining room. Sadie sits on the captain's seat now "Selma" has the other chair. I plan to add a few more babies with her but I've yet to unpack the ones I'm thinking of. Bree the Bird Lady and Penny are to the left, atop the built-in hutch. I thought this antique dog would look cute with her but it overwhelms the setting.

All and all she didn't do too bad. Her head, still there, looks differently with a bonnet. Her hands, er, well they are her hands. The over gown is wonderful! Just the right touch.

I decided to not apply the aging paint process, I'll use that on another. She has that new texture complexion she should have, although sometimes you can see a great glare on her face do to the varnish. That is why most of these photos are at a angle.

One other thing about a painted varnished cloth doll, they have a illusion of being heavy weighted, actually they weigh no more than a small saucer dish. I'd read that along the way But I'm still so amazed when I carry Selma, very sturdy, very light. Thanks for the words of encouragement on her!
