Only the people who love to collect dolls would know that. I have only discovered the true meaning behind dollmaking about 6 years ago. Maybe my grandmother told me but I did not pay attention. It starts with a hankie.......little bits of tissue rounded like a ball......
a knot for the neck........we used ribbon, Madam P's hankie,
ties for the arms..........

The doll, it is the true mother of invention, forget about sliced bread! A doll became a doll out of necessary means, in church, by a mother, using pocket items, meant to keep a child quiet.

Looks like something I could do, nice and simple.
I saw these in an old house we toured while in Charleston. Really neat simple way to keep a child occupied while in church. My grandmother supplied us kids with gum and candy. We got some ugly looks when rattling candy wrappers! The doll would have worked for me but not my 3 brothers! LOL...
Skeeter, For your brothers we need to make some cowboy dolls? Or did they prefer cars and trucks?
You guys are too funny, I never gave the little boy a thought. I burst out when I read that, you can knot the legs, just trying to think of a hat! May bee.....the gum wrapper. Remember making the chains with those!?
I never knew how to make gum wrapper chains but sure thought they were neat. I more liked the pop tab chains. Much easier.

This was a really fun post!!! I guess you can make dolls out of anything if you don't have the luxury of buying a doll in the store. Now what to do for the boys :-) Maybe a GI Joe doll out of camouflagefabric!
Mom, on for the 8th, gotta get ahead in post and visit some more, don't know 'bout this everyday thing. Wish I could find a crafter that does that. 2 more weeks of school. Thank gawd. Nite.

It's a boy thing for sure Skeeter. I still have some metal Tonkas. More junk. Someday it will wind up in the garden and my kids can pick it all up!
