Steampunk

What is it? I know what steam is, and I know what punk is, but what is "Steampunk"!?!! I'd never heard of it until I started selling on Etsy. Humm.... I've looked at beautiful babbles, bobbles and whatnot's on Etsy labeled "Steampunk" and it's always a look of quizzelsment. One seller even described her one ware as the only "ode to Steampunk" she will have. She called it good....
Wikipedia defines "Steampunk" as a sub-genre of fantasy + speculative fiction. What?
The term denotes a era when steam was wildly used and items are set with a Victorian flare. The above photo is an example of a custom steampunk computer, steampunk lighting. Jewelry can consist of lockets, cogs, keys, watch parts and or faces, etc. Anything considered with movement and or mechanical combined with the appropriate technology. Remember gothic punk? (Beetlejuice!) Punky punk? (Cindy Laupier! Joan Jett!) Well, "Steampunk" reference came to prominence in the 1980's to early 1990's, now I ask you....... Where was I? C&G Design

No, I'd never heard of it either but I'm on board now. Over 3000 pages on Etsy, like JOAT's said, "that's a lot of steamjunk," it neat though.

I've never heard of that before either. Very unusual

I first heard the term steampunk on Etsy, too. Thanks for defining it. I thought it meant using found objects, I like that they have to be specific.

Hey Dawn, you must have been in the back room eating donuts with me because I never heard of that before either! How funny since right in the middle of our era!

Dawn I guess you were in the same place as me back then as I never heard of it either but I like it. I like to think, even at my age, I am not a real uptight prude or an ole fuddy dude but I sure as heck missed that one.

Then I'm sure not alone, thank goodness!
I saw a "cuff" with all kinds of bobbles sewn to it. It mentioned it's worn upper leg over fishnet stockings. THEN I remembered "deperately seeking susan" and madonna. EGADS! Did we really wear such stuff?

Umm, maybe you were living under the same rock I lived under. I liked Cyndi Lauper and Joan Jet, but I've never heard of the term either. Maybe it's an invention someone made to confuse us all into thinking we actually missed out on something.

I'm pretty sure we must have been the same place...because I have never heard of it....I guess that means I ain't HIP! Ah well these things are gone before I figure them out...so how great could they be lol But I did enjoy reading about it and seeing the pictures. If it ever comes up in a conversation I'll look really well informed!
